Singing Bowl Mallets

A mallet does more than chime your bowl — it shapes the tone, sustain, and volume of every note, so matching the right mallet to your bowl matters as much as the bowl itself.

Suede mallets, like our Crystal Tones® Suede Mallet, produce a warm, rounded tone with a soft chime. They’re ideal for chiming your bowls — the soft suede protects the bowl’s surface while still drawing out a full, resonant tone. A forgiving, versatile choice for beginners, and one that works well on both crystal and metal bowls.

Wool mallets, such as our Crystal Tones® Wool Ball Mallet, deliver a fuller, more resonant chime with longer sustain. The dense wool wrap draws out the deepest overtones in larger Alchemy crystal and Supergrade® singing bowls, making them a favorite for group sound baths where volume and richness matter.

Rubber mallets create a brighter, more percussive chime — useful for quickly activating a bowl’s tone, or for smaller, higher-pitched bowls where a softer mallet gets lost. They’re also the most durable option for frequent practice.

The Crystal Tones® Sonic Mallet is built differently: its silicone-coated surface glides smoothly around the rim or sides of the bowl without the extra noise that can distract from a session, making it the ideal choice for singing your bowls — sustaining a long, continuous tone rather than a single chime.

As a general rule: the larger and lower-pitched your bowl, the more mallet you need — a heavier, softer head draws out its full voice, while smaller bowls respond best to a lighter touch. For crystal bowls specifically, start with suede for chiming or the Sonic Mallet for singing; both protect the bowl’s surface and produce the clean, sustained tone crystal is known for.
